Draft a lining for a hoodie

A few months ago I made a bomber jacket with a hood for my little nephew, but I didn't like that the hood was not lined. It didn't look professional enough I felt, so I went and drafted a lining for it and decided to share this in case some sewing beginners find it useful 😊

The pattern I used was Burda Kids 9399 View C. This comes with a hood that has an integrated facing but no lining for the rest of it. The fabric I used for the hood was velveteen and the back side of that isn't exactly attractive to the eye...Hence the lining.

The pattern piece for the hood looks like this:

After you're done cutting and marking your hood fabric, fold the pattern piece along the facing fold line, and mark where the edge lies on the top:

And on the bottom:

Then just draw a straight line between the marks you made with a ruler:

And cut the pattern piece along this new line:

You've now created the pattern piece for the lining! 👍

Next fold your fabric of choice for the lining in two and pin the new pattern piece to it. You need to cut two mirror pieces and remember Burda patterns don't have seam allowances so add those.

Trace around the pattern piece on both fabric pieces to mark your seam lines:

Now you're ready to sew.
For both main hood fabric and lining place the pieces right sides facing and sew along the curved seam line.

Now pin the front of the hood (seam line, not facing fold line!) to the front of the lining:

And sew together:

Turn the pieces right side out and fold the hood along the facing fold line then pin in place:

Next sew the hood to the jacket as per instruction, then press the seam allowances of lining and facing to wrong side and pin over the seam line connecting the hood to the jacket:

Baste this in place and stitch in place (mine doesn't look fantastic at this point as the thick padded fabric I used for the jacket was difficult to keep in place, but you get the idea):

And lastly, stitch along the seam line joining the lining to the hood:

Et voila! A much neater result 😊
